Test run in Switzerland

The Print the Change Community is going to start a pilot phase for new printing inks. We will test a new printing ink which is going for a gold certification level.

The first to start with the test runs is Markus Vögeli in Switzerland at Vögeli AG. His gained experience will be shared with the manufacturer of the ink for possible fine-tuning of the ink.

Cradle to Cradle Congress 2018

The fifth international Cradle to Cradle Congress took place from September 14th to 15th 2018 at Leuphana University, Lüneburg.

Ernst Gugler (gugler* pureprint) and Markus Vögeli (Vögeli AG) attended. Ernst Gugler is an official friend of the C2C e.V. and displayed this on a small booth with other friends like Werner & Mertz and others. Markus Vögeli is part of the Healthy Printing Initiative and presented his achievements as a certified Cradle to Cradle printer. Remember: only printers of the Print The Change Community are able to deliver printing products really matching the Cradle to Cradle standard! Join in and get quickly certified using the knowledge of the community.

Tim Janßen, executive director of C2C e.V. is positively tuned after the successful Congress: “The clear growth in international speakers and guests motivates us immensely and strengthens us in our work as an NGO. With the Cradle to Cradle Congress we send a strong sign of change into society: The community is on the right track; the innovative power of the C2C-companies is impressive. That is why we’re proud to be the most important platform for C2C-innovation worldwide!”

Doing what’s right

On Thursday, 30 August, Vögeli AG organized the event “Products 5.0 – Are Your Products Future Proof?” and welcomed almost 70 guests who were all fascinated at the end.

In workshops, specialists from ETH Zürich and EPEA Switzerland supported the participants to find ways in which our society will not have to give up luxury and comfort despite a shortage of resources – with products that are future proof.

Saskia Harthoorn and Anita van Rozen from the embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands demonstrated how the Dutch want to secure the future of their society by transforming their recycling management system by 2050.

Based on the Cradle to Cradle® concept, Katja Hansen, Director of the Healthy Printing Initiative, demonstrated how we can also master our greatest challenges with the correct use of our intelligence.

Paper – a natural product?

According to Katja Hansen, global paper consumption is constantly increasing, and will continue to do so. The reasons for this are above all the substitution of plastic and online shopping, which drives the use of cardboard packaging first and foremost. This makes it urgently necessary that we use our paper resources with care. There are, however, major quality problems when it comes to paper recycling. For example, recycled paper cannot be used for food packaging because the toxic chemicals it contains could transfer to the food. For similar reasons, waste created during the recycling process needs to be treated as hazardous waste.

Vögeli AG, with its Cradle to Cradle Certified™ printed materials, is the first and, until now, only company in Switzerland that can manufacture printed materials that are recyclable and therefore healthy and safe for the biological cycle.

German Stiftung Buchkunst honours C2C children’s book

A selection committee recently choose the 25 most beautiful books for 2018. The cradle to cradle certified children’s book series “WER BIST DENN DU?” by Kosmos publishing house is one of them. We congratulate all winners!

We believe that especially for children picture books without any harmful substances are crucial. In addition, the books are optimised for a circular economy. They are 100% recyclable.

Gugler* is very happy about producing more and more children’s books. Besides Kosmos, we also produce books for Neunmalklug Verlag and many more.

Future-proof: Print the Change Community

B.A.U.M. e.V., the German Association of Environmental Management published the study “Designing printed products for the future”.
There you will find some background information about the current situation of paper recycling: the contamination of recycled paper and the low quality of “deinking” sludge.

Until now.
Cradle to Cradle™ printing products are optimised for the biological cycle. They tweak the quality of the sludge. Recycled paper won’t be contaminated.
Future-proof: Cradle to Cradle™ printing products define a new level of quality and are produced by the Print the Change Community.

Join in! Be part of the printing revolution! Let’s set a new green benchmark for the printing industry!
Take advantage of the opportunity to position your printing company as a pioneer with a Cradle to Cradle™ certificate. You will benefit from:
• a unique selling proposition – competitive advantages by offering a new level of quality for existing and new customers
• speed – you can start “immediately” since a wide range of material is already certified by the community and no development time for analysis and certification is needed
• cost savings – in basic development and future material developments
• strong community – sharing of experience and implementing joint projects

We are looking for more printing companies around the world to join in. Together we can make a difference. Join us. Get in touch.

Recertification: KLS PurePrint A/S and gugler* GmbH

Success #1 new material: We proudly present Pureprint gloss, Pureprint coated volume, suitable for eg. magazines, Pureprint cardboard double-sided, and finally Pureprint folding box board for packaging. There is also a new glue certified for children’s board books.

Success #2 platin level: KLS Pureprint managed to achieve platin-level in the field of renewable energy. Of all other certified companies in the world just two others managed to do so.

The background is the long-term work of restructuring and reducing the company’s energy consumption. Since 2009, the company has exclusively used 100% renewable energy and has been CO2 neutral. Among other things: achieved by using only energy from its own wind turbine and by driving in electric cars. But there was much more to do. In order to calculate the embedded energy of the products from goods receipt to delivery, the company itself had to develop a life-cycle analysis model (LCA) as no applicable models existed on the market. The model is based on the United Nations Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

Print the Change Community meets in Melk

The members of the international Cradle to Cradle™ family plan to strengthen their collaboration in development and marketing

Melk, 1st March 2018. The town of Melk in Lower Austria became the hub of the Print the Change community last week. Managing directors of the community partners convened at gugler* headquarters for two days to decide on the roadmap for 2018. The meeting in Austria had been prompted, among other things, by the opening of gugler*s Sinnreich complex in Melk with its first Austrian plus-energy building inspired by Cradle to Cradle™. After all, this is how nature would build.

At this two-day workshop, the partners presented new Cradle to Cradle™ developments: five new types of paper, three additional types of cardboard packaging, and an adhesive for children’s board books. In addition to that, the workshop participants discussed the focus for 2018. Collectively, the community hopes to collaborate more closely in the future not only on binding techniques, recycled paper, and envelopes, but also in optimizing processes in production and sales & distribution. Marketing is another area that is expected to benefit from the collaboration. Expanding the community is the next step.
